I Have 3 Words for You…

Advocate, Advocate, Advocate!
It took me some time to get to the point in my life where I took charge of my health and by doing so I began to see the doctor-patient relationship much differently. When I was a young(er) woman, I saw my doctor as being the expert and basically allowed the doctors that I saw to be in charge of MY health! Looking back, if it wasn’t so sad – the idea is almost laughable to me now. At times, I’d leave the doctor’s office with more questions than answers. It’s only now in my 40’s that I realize the profound effect the unanswered questions have had on my health.
If there is any question in your mind about the doctor-patient relationship you have, watch this video and ask yourself if you are going to wait until something drastic happens in your health or if you are going to choose today to stand up for YOUR health. I assure you that your doctor stands up for his/her own health and that of his/her family. Your doctor should respect your need to self-advocate and be willing to be part of a team. You may not need to get a new doctor but you may have to be willing to take your doctor by the hand and lead the way….
I love this video, so true and an eye opener to real life with a Dr.
Angela, I love this video too! It’s a great example of how taking charge of your health can affect the outcome.
Once again You’ve opened another incredible thinking process! You never cease to amaze!! Thank you!
You’re welcome Kim. When I encountered ePatientDave I was so inspired – there are so many inspiring patient advocates out there. I will be introducing them as I get the chance! Participatory medicine and the eHealth/ePatient movement is a revolution taking place today. The internet and social media have provided the means now we just have to take up the charge!
Thank you for this! Now how do I get enough energy to fight? I’m so exhausted all the time…
I’m sorry you’re feeling so exhausted and low energy. It brings home the point that there are often barriers to advocating for yourself – most of all it takes energy to fight doesn’t it?
But I’m glad you asked, I’m actually working on a post right now about how to get help advocating. Some ideas for you in the meantime – ask a trusted friend or family member to be there for you when you’re unable to advocate for yourself. Bring someone along to your doctor’s appointments to help – especially when you’re feeling overwhelmed. And there are actually professional advocates out there that will advocate for you. Of course they cost $ so if the cost is an issue a friend or family member might be the best bet. That has it’s challenges too, as we tend to feel like a huge burden and also it’s not always feasible for people to come with us to our appointments. But I think some people want to help and don’t know how – there is the perfect way for them to help.
I hope you are feeling better – each day brings something new – my hope for you is that the days get better and brighter. 🙂
