There are a few ways to find a Doctor that has expertise in the use of bioidentical hormones. Not all doctors are versed on the use of bioidentical hormones, in fact, some doctors may try to dissuade you and/or tell you that synthetic hormones and bioidentical hormones are similar. Many doctors have not kept themselves informed about the hormone research and, in fact, base their treatment decision upon the WHI study of 2002 which basically revealed “synthetic” hormones were increasing cancer rates among women. Some assumed that the results of the study would be the same for bio-identical hormones. The hormone experts that I follow insist that there is a difference.
Doctors Who Practise Functional Medicine
The Institute of Functional Medicine describes Functional Medicine this way:
“Functional medicine addresses the underlying causes of disease, using a systems-oriented approach and engaging both patient and practitioner in a therapeutic partnership. It is an evolution in the practice of medicine that better addresses the healthcare needs of the 21st century. By shifting the traditional disease-centered focus of medical practice to a more patient-centered approach, functional medicine addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. Functional medicine practitioners spend time with their patients, listening to their histories and looking at the interactions among genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors that can influence long-term health and complex, chronic disease. In this way, functional medicine supports the unique expression of health and vitality for each individual.”
I promise you that when you find a respected doctor who practises functional medicine – you will be in partnership with your doctor about your health. It is empowering to be able to have discussions about your own body and your own health with your doctor.
The best advice I can give you is to Google functional medicine doctors for your area or alternatively contact a compounding pharmacy:
Your compounding pharmacist will know the local doctors who prescribe bioidentical hormones and may be able to provide you with a list. To find a compounding pharmacy in your area you can search Google or check out Association of Compounding Pharmacists of Canada (it is by no means an exhaustive list but it has a few pharmacies listed)
Rocky Mountain Analytical Lab
This is the only accredited lab in Canada that does saliva hormone testing and they have a list of over 1500 medical and naturopathic doctors that use their services. You can search their list based on your Province and City. Check it out Rocky Mountain Analytical – Find a Healthcare Professional
Health Food Stores
Your local health food store may have information about doctors that prescribe natural hormones. Some health food stores like Natures Emporium in Newmarket, Ontario even hold workshops and have naturopathic doctors on-site.
